A Broadway musical about the tempestuous relationship between actress Lily Garland (Madeline) Broadway producer Oscar Jaffee (John Cullum). Madeline got a Tony nomination for her performance, and costars Cullum and Kevin Kline got Tonys. Unfortunately, things did not go smoothly -- only a few short months into the show's run, Madeline left the production and was replaced by understudy Judy Kaye. Thankfully, Madeline had already recorded the original cast album. It's hard to figure out just what went wrong, and the album liner notes, clearly biased in Kaye's favor, are very little help, offering such preposterous observations as: "There is little doubt that Kahn's withdrawal hurt her chances of having a career as a Broadway musical star." Yeah, right.
